Top Secrets to Best Website Design
Best Website Design Secrets
We have been designing and re-designing websites for clients since 2008. It’s amazing how many people follow the crowd and keep making the same website design mistakes over and over again. The other thing we see is web designers making good looking and functional websites, but the site is poorly ranked on Google, has poorly written content (or sometimes is gorgeous and beautiful with huge high-definition images, but no content! … How can Google know what to index the site for??!!).

What we think business owners want and need is a website that works hard for them. The site is well ranked on Google for relevant keyword phrases and the content is compelling and helps them get new contacts and leads to help them grow their business or to buy items on their site creating the magical and fun passive income we all dream about.

What are the most common mistakes on websites today?
- No contact information above the fold (this means that people don’t have to scroll down to see it).
- Their home page is mostly about the business owner. This is common in service industries or technical experts. There’s a lot of information on the owner’s history, schooling, credentials and experience.
- The site is not well organized, hard to navigate, too much information and hard to find exactly what the visitor is looking for.
- There is too much paragraph text. Long winded paragraph text causes site visitors to bounce to a site that is easier to read. Unfortunately, humanity is too busy and our attention span is very short.
- The site domain (URL) is too long or uses the owner’s name.
- The site is old and not responsive (not scalable to any mobile, tablet or computer device).
What is often missing that could make the best website design?
- We see some people trying to do search engine optimization [SEO] on the site using simple meta tags and it’s clear that they didn’t do proper keyword research. This means they may be optimizing for keyword phrases that are too competitive, have too little traffic or little commercialization value.
- Proper SEO is often missing or misunderstood. Google has an algorithm that changes all the time and is akin to artificial intelligence. If you appear to be working the system, Google will pick that up and your site rankings will suffer.
- A dead website will also lose rankings and traffic. What’s missing here is new, fresh, valuable, helpful content added on a regular basis.
What makes for a highly effective website?
- When you write content for pages or blog posts, be sure to use bullet or numbered points to break up paragraphs.
- Also use relevant, clear, professional images.
- Make the content on your home page about the client and what’s in it for them to work with you. Here’s a good copywriting model:
- Grab their attention with your title
- Tell them what’s in it for them – results, benefits, emotions
- Tell them how to get it with your clear call to action
- Use consistent branding with your logo and slogan.
- Hire someone to do keyword research and SEO for you – get better Google rankings and more relevant traffic.
- Update your content regularly – a blog is a wonderful way to do this.
What is critical for the best website design?
- Have an opt-in with an irresistible giveaway, so you can keep in touch with your fans.
- Make sure your website is responsive.
- Make it as easy as possible for potential clients to contact you. If you’re afraid of giving out your cell number, get a free Google voice number and forward it to your cell.
- Make sure all your contact information – name, address, phone are consistent and easily found on all pages and posts.
